Discourses From the East
Lamjai is a new multilingual webzine from Assam, created as a space for reflection, dialogue, and debate on the questions that shape our times. We begin with Axomiya and English, and soon hope to include other languages of Assam such as Karbi and Bodo, staying true to the multilingual and multiethnic fabric of the region.

Though based in Assam, Lamjai’s concerns reach beyond it. We draw inspiration from the many histories, cultures, and conversations that connect this part of the world with other regions across eastern and southern Asia. We see these connections as part of a shared landscape of livelihood, ecology, and resilience that continues to evolve through dialogue and exchange. Lamjai also seeks to foster conversations between Assam and the rest of South Asia, encouraging exchange, collaboration, and mutual understanding through shared stories, reflections, and translations.
Translation will be an important part of our work. While not every article will appear in both languages, we will translate select essays and reflections that can meaningfully travel across linguistic and regional contexts. We also hope to build collaborations for regional translation exchanges—between Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Karbi, and the languages of our eastern neighbours.
Lamjai is an entirely voluntary effort by a small, loose group of activists, intellectuals, lawyers, and journalists who believe in the value of thoughtful conversation. If you would like to volunteer in translation or copy-editing, please reach us at support@lamjai.in

The name Lamjai comes from a Karbi word meaning discourse. Our friends from Meghalaya have also told us that in Khasi, it resonates with Lam (to lead, from ialam) and Jai (from Jai Jai, meaning peacefully, steadfast).
We like to think of Lamjai as both — a place to speak and a way to move forward together.
