I live in the Northeast
of India, the world’s fifth-largest economy.
With every breath I take,
the soil of my home slips away.
In the murky waters of abandoned dams,
left behind by so-called developed nations,
my notebook of poems drifts dissolving.
I am repeatedly told that
there is no grand future waiting for me.
I am repeatedly told that in my margins
The language of the land is eviction
The language of love is separation
My right to dream has been traded away
into the hands of capitalists.
My childhood, lost to border conflicts.
My youth, its tender beauty bruised
under their hungry, lingering gaze.
I cannot go to Delhi to study,
yet I am expected to offer Delhi,
my vote,
my labor,
my life to sustain its luxury.
I give Delhi the lifeblood of my fertile fields
to be drained—slowly and silently.
When my land burns,
when the streets echo with gang rape,
when my mother tongue
is blackened and shamed,
I am erased from the grammar of national concern.
When I walk the streets and dare to speak of rights,
the internet goes dark.
Tear gas floods my eyes.
For the fiery generations of my soil,
they keep ready bullets of encounter,
and a raised unyielding MIDDLE FINGER.
I live in the Northeast

Yet the history of my land finds no voice
in the nation’s centre.
They do not speak of our athletes,
our rivers dammed and broken,
or the worth, of the finger with which I vote.
At the centre,
they call me-
savage,
Chinese,
barbaric,
imposter;
and cast me aside.
And I
still, helplessly,
love this country.

why does my silence frighten you?
Why must you police my voice,
rewrite my face,
and claim my land
Yet deny that I BELONG?
